Atomic spin gyroscope

The atomic co-magnetometer gyroscope provides the highest demonstrated rotation sensitivity in a package significantly smaller than the best commercial fiber optic gyroscopes. A co-magnetometer gyroscope monitors a pair of coupled spin ensembles in response to non-inertial torques. A noble gas with nuclear polarization is chosen for its very long coherence time, measured in hours, and forms an ideal gyroscope sensing element. The noble gas response is monitored and dynamically damped by an ensemble of alkali metal atoms that are pumped and probed to form a SERF magnetometer.
